New research from the UK has shown that glucocorticoid medications given in primary care settings are associated with suicidal behaviors and severe neuropsychiatric disorders. Common glucocorticoids are dexamethasone, cortisone, prednisone and hydrocortisone. These medications are very commonly used, and are given for a wide variety of diseases including auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, allergies, lung problems including COPD, and other conditions that affect the lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys, blood, thyroid, stomach, intestines and certain types of cancer.
In a large study of adult patients receiving glucocorticoids, those getting the medications were “almost 7 times more likely to commit or attempt suicide, more than 5 times more likely to develop delirium, more than 4 times more likely to develop mania, and almost twice as likely to develop depression than those with the same underlying conditions who did not receive the medications”. This class of steroid medications usually treats immune problems and inflammation, and is very effective at shutting down the immune response. But at what cost? At Human Reconstruction, we can naturally decrease inflammation, and reset the immune system without dangerous drugs. We use a combination of herbal and nutritional supplements, elimination of dietary and environmental allergens, as well as chelation and detoxification therapies.
