Many dryer sheets contain cancer causing chemicals like parabens that fragrance your clothes. If you walk down the detergent row, you will notice the overwhelming synthetic smells, and you may get a head ache, or shortness of breath. Many of those chemicals have never been tested for human use, and have health effects. I know many doctors who don’t let their pregnant wives anywhere near those aisles.
An alternative to the toxic chemicals that will reduce static and perfume your clothes naturally are Wool Dryer Balls with a drop of essential oil applied to them every few loads. The wool absorbs the static charge, and separates the clothes to decrease drying time and save you on your utility bill. The natural essential oils add a delightful smell to your clean clothes.
Many people have switched to using “Free and Clear” products because they get rashes from regular detergents. “Contact dermatitis” is a reaction to chemicals found in the detergents. Free and Clear products are dye and fragrance free, and so they do not scent your clothes, and you may not feel as though they are as clean as when you use scented detergents. Adding a small amount of essential oil to the dryer ball can add natural fragrance. Our favorites are orange, and lavender, but you may get a variety of oils to pick your own favorite.
Decreasing your exposure to toxic chemicals is very important, especially if you are sensitive to them. Visit Environmental Working Group to learn about green products for cleaning.
