Pre-Diabetes Linked to Increased Cancer Risk

Elevated blood sugars increase a person’s risk for cancer.  [Reference]  The mechanism is not completely understood, but is probably due to several different reasons, here are a couple of my theories:

1. Sugar suppresses the immune system.  Your white blood cells are supposed to scavenge your tissues looking for abnormal cells, which can lead to cancer, and destroy them.  If your immune system isn’t working optimally because of elevated blood sugars or high stress, cancer risk would increase.

2. Cancer cells use glucose for fuel.  If you give something its favorite food, it will grow faster and better.  Eating sugar when you have cancer is like throwing gasoline on the fire.  We recommend ketogenic diets to our cancer patients to starve the cancer cells.

3. Inflammation: Sugar is highly inflammatory in the body and elevated blood sugars cause a lot of damage.  One way of thinking about it is that sugar is like broken glass flowing through your blood vessels and causing damage.  Cancer is thought to be an inflammatory disease, so by increasing inflammation, you are increasing cancer’s viability in your body.  Inflammatory markers are responsible for metastasis, for example.

There are natural, naturopathic ways to manage your blood sugar and decrease cancer risk.  Contact the alternative medicine specialists at Human Reconstruction to help guide you.  We have locations in Pleasanton and Sacramento, CA
